Organizations Urge Multnomah County to Protect the Office of Sustainability
More than 40 organizations representing conservation, climate action, and environmental justice in Multnomah County came together to send a clear message to Multnomah County Chair Vega Pederson and the County Commissioners: do not dismantle the Office of Sustainability.
This joint letter expresses our deep concern over proposed cuts and changes to the Office of Sustainability, which has long been a cornerstone in our county’s efforts to create a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable future. The Office of Sustainability is a trusted partner in community-centered policy, a hub of expertise, and a force for environmental stewardship. The staff are deeply respected for their dedication and inclusive approach to shaping local climate and sustainability policy.
At a time when environmental institutions at the federal and state level are being undermined, cutting local leadership in this area would be a major setback. It sends the wrong message. This is a moment when we need to be stepping forward. We are urging the the County to reject these cuts and recommit to a sustainable and just future that is built in collaboration with the communities most impacted by climate and environmental destruction.
